The first murals I ever did were of the new Denver International Airport, which opened in 1999.
They were all pretty simple: a giant metal door with a big logo on it, and then a white square on a background.
But the idea was simple enough to make up, and they were really good.
So I thought I’d do a few more.
The next year, I took that same approach for the new Dulles International Airport.
I started out with a bunch of basic shapes and colors, and tried to combine them into something that looked cool, and had some texture.
I did this with the airport’s main terminal and a few other areas, including the entrance, which I colored in a nice, medium-dark green.
The rest of the airport was very similar.
I had the airport in the background, with the main terminal on the other side, and with a couple of other buildings on the periphery.
After some experimentation, I decided that it would be more effective to try to combine these areas together.
And I got pretty good at it.
I kept changing it up and changing it out, and eventually it got kind of out of hand.
Then, after doing a couple more versions, I realized I was doing it wrong.
So, instead of going with the basic shape, I just used a more complicated design.
And as a result, the new terminal looks like a giant, rectangular building with a giant blue dot on top.
And the old terminal looks more like a generic rectangular building.
In a lot of ways, that’s kind of the result of what I was trying to do.
I was just trying to create something unique.
What I really wanted to accomplish with these murals was to make a more immersive experience for people who are looking at it in a different way.
The result is that I was able to create an experience that’s just as interesting to look at as it is to fly through.
The other important thing to note is that they look really good, and the people who were watching the airport had a good time.
I think they’re a good fit for the Dulles Terminal.
You’ll notice that a lot more of them were put up by local artists, and a lot were by people who had visited the airport.
In other words, people who may not have been in the airport and had never seen anything like it before.
And if you’re interested in the murals yourself, the gallery is at the Airport Museum, at the National Air and Space Museum, and at the Denver Art Museum.
You can check out a selection of the work in the gallery here.
I hope you enjoy these.
And, as always, I’ll be posting more art on this site.
Until next time, happy traveling.
